Your character is absolutely free to obey the whims of their own agenda. They can't get away from their Shadow, though some villains, for instance, would assuredly get along with it. Shadows will frequently try to push your character in a negative direction, and it's really up to you, the player, to decide how successful it can be. As previously mentioned, we will not be policing or micro-managing how you handle your character's Shadow: there should be enough leeway for you to create your own set of fun shenanigans.
While typically dark, some events and/or situations do hold a more casual tone, at times borderline silly (the Darklings, for instance, are very fond of pranks). As a player, you do have the power to influence the setting in certain ways by creating NPCs, monsters, guilds, etc. Ascension is not meant for everyone, if there is indeed such a thing, so if you'd rather your character walk a darker path, it's entirely possible.
